Mercury Towers management has issued a clarification following reports that glass fell from Mercury House during Saturday nightβs storm, emphasising that no material fell from the building and there was never any danger to the public.
In a statement, the company explained that the Civil Protection Department (CPD) was called on 10th January, after a potential hazard was reported at one of the apertures of Mercury House. Upon arrival, CPD officers identified a pane of glass on the second floor that could have posed a risk if strong winds had intensified.
βWhen the Civil Protection arrived on site, they observed a pane of glass on the second floor of Mercury House that could potentially pose a risk. Consequently, temporary precautionary measures were taken so that, should the wind intensify, there would be no danger to the public,β wrote Mercury Malta on Facebook.
Temporary safety measures were immediately put in place as a precaution. After these measures, CPD confirmed that there was no longer any risk to the public, and the road was reopened shortly afterwards.
The company stressed that no glass or other materials fell from Mercury Towers or the adjoining hotel at any point. The actions taken were purely preventive and part of standard safety procedures during severe weather.
This clarification follows earlier reports that the street in front of Mercury Towers had been cordoned off during the storm.
Mercury Towers management reiterated its commitment to public safety, noting that it continues to work closely with authorities to ensure the wellbeing of residents, visitors, and the general public.
