Malta Dairy Products Ltd (MDP) has announced a price increase on several Benna milk products, saying the move is needed to “ensure the long-term sustainability and reliability of Malta’s fresh milk supply.”

The biggest jump comes in whole milk (1000ml), which has gone up 7c and now retails at €1.30 per litre.

In a statement, MDP said the fresh dairy sector is facing ongoing cost pressures, despite government support on energy prices and feed subsidies.

Rising costs for animal feed, ingredients, packaging, transport, and ongoing investment in quality and reliability all contributed to the decision. The company also noted that it absorbed a large portion of cost increases last year, but further adjustments were necessary to keep the sector stable.

This is part of a gradual price rise over the years, with MDP citing supply chain issues and the financing of a new milk production factory. For perspective, a one-litre packet of whole milk cost just 86c in 2018.

MDP says the increases are necessary to keep Malta’s fresh milk supply sustainable, but for consumers, it’s another nudge on the grocery bill.
