Malta’s Education Ministry has confirmed that, for now, there are no plans to close schools due to the current weather situation, and schools are expected to open as normal tomorrow despite ongoing weather warnings. Authorities are closely monitoring conditions and will promptly share any updates if the situation changes according to Times of Malta.

The statement from the ministry comes amid concerns from parents after the Meteorological Office issued a red weather warning, forecasting very strong east‑southeast winds that are expected to reach gale force through Monday and into early Tuesday. Some parents questioned whether it would be safe to send their children to school, especially given similar closures in parts of Sicily and Sardinia due to the developing storm.

One parent highlighted the situation at Mellieħa primary school, which is currently operating from temporary structures on a hilltop, raising further safety concerns. The ministry noted that church schools will follow directives from either the Civil Protection authorities or the Education Ministry, and so far no closure directives have been issued.

The Civil Protection Department emphasised that it does not have the authority to order school closures; its role is to monitor weather reports and issue safety warnings, which currently include avoiding rooftops, balconies, hillsides, exposed structures and coastal areas during strong winds.
