Since yesterday evening, the Armed Forces of Malta have been working tirelessly alongside the Civil Protection Department, members of the Malta Police Force and nurses and doctors from Mater Dei Hospital in the desperate search for a 13-year-old girl who was reportedly swept into the sea in Ċirkewwa.

Despite brutal weather conditions, strong waves, cold temperatures and poor visibility, the search has continued. This morning, the Malta Police even deployed a RHIB to support the ongoing efforts at sea. Later this afternoon, officers located a jacket which was sadly confirmed to belong to the missing girl.

Beyond the physical search, the Police Support Response Team has also been on the ground, offering emotional and practical support to the girl’s family during this unimaginably painful time.

It is not easy to spend your working day searching for a 13-year-old child in a rough sea, in the cold, in the dark and in extreme weather conditions. We cannot fully understand what these workers are going through, but we remain deeply proud that our country has people like them, people who quietly and selflessly show up when it matters most.

Last night and throughout the early hours of this morning, doctors and nurses from Mater Dei Hospital also continued assisting in the rescue operation in Ċirkewwa, waiting, hoping and staying ready for every possible outcome. They too deserve our deepest thanks.

Our thoughts today are with the family of this young girl, who right now need strength, patience and compassion.

To every police officer, soldier, civil protection worker, doctor, nurse and volunteer out there right now:

Thank you. We are proud of you.
