Oliwia Wojnowska, a 13-year-old Polish girl, tragically lost her life after being swept away by powerful waves at Ċirkewwa on Monday evening.

A three-day search ensued as authorities did their best conducting a research operation during brutal weather conditions.

Oliwia was with her 49-year-old father and 17-year-old brother before she was swept out to sea due to strong winds in Ċirkewwa on Monday evening. Emergency services went on site immediately to try and rescue the girl after receiving an alert through the 112 emergency call. However, the responders had to suspend their coastal operations in the evening and continued their search for an entire day on Tuesday.

Around midday on Tuesday, the authorities confirmed that Oliwia fell from the South Quay in Ċirkewwa as they were on the inside part of the ramp. The father and son were able to move toward the inner side of the ramp, while the girl was carried off by the wave and swept into the sea. Oliwia’s mother is also in Malta and was at the hotel at the time of the incident.

The father sustained minor injuries while attempting to save his daughter, and the brother is currently in shock.

Around 1pm yesterday, the CPD found a pink jacket belonging to the girl. After this the rescuers continued to search the area Ċirkewwa and Ramla by boat and helicopter.

Searches continued on foot along the shoreline and rocks, as well as by drone and boat. At around 5pm, the CPD officers issued a statement saying they would not rest before the girl is found.

“The operation involved 25 rescuers from five CPD stations, supported by one sea asset, Five rescue vehicles, and five senior officers, and was carried out hand in hand with the Armed Forces of Malta, who provided rescue divers, sea assets, aerial support by helicopter, and drone surveillance,” wrote CPD on Facebook.

Unfortunately, earlier today, after divers entered the sea they found the body of young Oliwia trapped among rocks on the seabed in Paradise Bay.

The search ended in Marfa as the body of the young girl was identified bringing a tragic end to this operation. The body was then transferred from the boat to the land as search and rescue operations stopped by emergency responders.

A magisterial inquiry has been opened into the case, led by Magistrate Monica Borg Galea, and police investigations are ongoing.

Lovin Malta extends its deepest condolences to the grieving family
