Justice Minister Jonathan Attard has criticised the Opposition’s handling of the ongoing deadlock over the appointment of a new Chief Justice, saying the government put forward a competent and credible nominee, but was met with silence from the Opposition leader.
Speaking on Wednesday morning, Attard said the Prime Minister had proposed a candidate who, in the government’s view, has both the competence and integrity required for the role. He added that despite “a number of letters, meetings and videos on sociafl media”, the Opposition leader never clearly stated his position on the nomination.
“I believe that on an institutional process like this one, the country cannot have an opposition leader that will not give his opinion and doesn’t make a decision,” Attard said.
He went on to criticise the Nationalist Party’s approach, arguing that this was not a serious way of handling such a crucial constitutional process. “The government isn’t going to accept someone who will put the stability of the country in peril,” he said.
Attard also pointed out that, just a few hours later and without any prior discussion, the Opposition announced through news portals the names of four candidates it would be willing to accept for the post.
Meanwhile, Myriam Spiteri Debono has stepped in, urging both the government and the Opposition to reach an agreement on the appointment. The President has called a meeting between the two sides, scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Attard confirmed that the President had approached him to hold talks aimed at breaking the impasse over the selection of Malta’s next Chief Justice.
