The Partit Nazzjonalista has issued a statement announcing that Opposition Leader Alex Borg has formally asked Myriam Spiteri Debono to preside over every meeting with Robert Abela concerning the nomination of a new Chief Justice.
In a message published on social media, Borg said that in the current circumstances he believes the President is the best placed to safeguard the Constitution and the institutional processes surrounding the appointment. He added that, in his view, the same approach should also apply to the appointment of the Auditor General.
Borg said the request is being made in the national interest, stressing that Malta must come first and that the country needs to move forward with credibility and trust in its institutions.
He explained that he is taking this step following what he described as a series of false statements regarding communication between himself and the Prime Minister.
According to Borg, the process has lost its importance and credibility, shifting away from who should become Chief Justice and towards whether the Maltese people can trust the Prime Minister’s conduct.
The Opposition Leader said his actions are not intended to obstruct the process or to block any individual appointment, but to ensure that institutions remain sincere and are not “steamrolled”.
Borg also invited the public to assess the Prime Minister’s conduct over recent weeks, claiming that the Prime Minister changed his version of events multiple times, from an alleged lack of consultation, to claims that went unanswered, and even to suggestions of a split within the PN parliamentary group.
He said none of these claims materialised, adding that the PN parliamentary group remains united in defending the national interest and standing up for Maltese and Gozitan citizens.
The statement concludes by saying that, despite having lost trust in the Prime Minister’s word, Borg is still inviting him back to the table to discuss the two appointments of national importance, under the auspices of the President of Malta.
