The energy sector’s progress was commended in a report published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Among the points mentioned in the report, Malta’s authorities were praised for achieving 17% in the country’s energy mix, surpassing the original 2030 target of 11.5%, and revised its goal to 24.5%.

The report also mentioned that the National Energy Climate Plan (NECP) is also targeting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 40% by 2030 compared to 2005.

“Implementation has advanced, including progress on the second Malta-Italy interconnection, electricity grid upgrades, financial incentives for electric vehicles and charging stations, and continued rooftop-PV rollout,” reads the report.

It also highlights that Malta could further speed up its green transition by continuing to streamline permitting processes, upgrading grid infrastructure, phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, and cutting emissions in the transport sector.

With regards to coastal flooding, sea-level rise and extreme heat, the report notes that the authorities have completed a Vulnerability and Risk Assessment across 10 priority sectors and are currently obtaining expert advice to develop a costed National Climate Resilience Plan.

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli took to Facebook to celebrate the success which is being commended locally and on the international stage.
