Maltese endurance runner Zach Vella is preparing to take on an extraordinary challenge: a 2,700km run from London to Malta in aid of YMCA Malta and its work supporting people experiencing homelessness and vulnerability.
The challenge, titled Miles from Home, will see Vella cover the equivalent of more than 45 consecutive ultra marathons, averaging around 60 kilometres a day for over six weeks. His route will take him through France, across the Swiss Alps, down through Italy, into Sicily, and finally on to Malta, testing both physical and mental endurance across varied and demanding terrain.
The run will begin on 22 March in London, with a symbolic departure from Mahatma Gandhi Hall at the Indian YMCA, followed by a tribute stop at St Paul’s Cathedral, where YMCA founder Sir George Williams is buried. Unlike single-day endurance events, the challenge will require sustained ultra-distance performance with minimal recovery, day after day, across multiple countries.
Vella said the run is driven by a belief in dignity and opportunity for all.
“I firmly believe that shelter is a human right and the foundation of life and wellbeing. All people should have the opportunity to dream and follow their path,” he said.
The initiative is supporting YMCA Malta’s efforts to expand and strengthen its Drop-In Centre, Ċentru Albert Degiorgio, and shelter services, as demand continues to grow. YMCA Malta CEO Anthony Camilleri said the scale of the challenge reflects the seriousness of the cause, describing it as a powerful symbol of the long and difficult journeys many face when rebuilding their lives.
Throughout the run, Vella will be supported by YMCA networks across Europe, highlighting the organisation’s international reach. His arrival in Malta will coincide with the YMCA Europe General Assembly, which will bring more than 120 delegates and leaders from across the continent to the island.
Members of the public and corporate partners are being encouraged to follow the journey and support the initiative, with donations contributing directly to improved facilities and services for those relying on YMCA Malta’s support.
