Addressing EU leaders at today’s summit, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola warned that Europe is facing a “narrow window of opportunity” to secure its economic future.

With decisive discussions expected at the March European Council, Metsola urged leaders to act swiftly to ensure the bloc remains competitive on the global stage.

Turning to the economy, she said Europe does not lack savings, but rather the mechanisms to turn them into investment.

Stressing the importance of completing a Savings and Investments Union, she linked the issue directly to the rising cost of living, which Eurobarometer surveys show is the top concern among citizens.

“We have savings in Europe, but we don’t have enough tools to turn them into growth. If we manage that with innovation, we can scale up and we will be essentially lowering prices,” she stated.

Metsola also called for the immediate removal of barriers within the Single Market, echoing conclusions presented by former Italian prime ministers Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta at the summit.

Advocating what she described as “pragmatic realism,” she suggested that if unanimity cannot be achieved among all Member States, those willing should proceed through enhanced cooperation.

On trade, she welcomed the recent agreement with India and noted that work on the EU-US trade agreement is ongoing, with a committee vote scheduled for 24 February and a plenary vote in March.

“Strategic autonomy is not about isolation, it is about influence,” she said, adding that Europe must remain “open, but never naive,” while ensuring policies deliver tangible outcomes for businesses and families.
