A coalition of NGOs and civil society organisations is calling on the Maltese government to open a proper public consultation period on the Equality Bill 2026 before it moves forward in Parliament.

The group said the bill, which deals with issues such as equality, discrimination and fundamental rights, is too important to be rushed through without giving organisations and the public enough time to review it.

They argued that the amended draft, published on 7th July, only gives stakeholders a few days to analyse the proposed changes and provide meaningful feedback.

The coalition is urging the government to postpone the bill’s Committee Stage to allow for wider consultation before Parliament votes on the legislation.

Among the signatories are representatives from the Secretariat for Catholic Education, the Association of Church Schools, the Kamra tal-Ispiżjara, Doctors for Life, and the Life Network Foundation Malta.
