The government is investing around β¬2.8 million over the next three years to support three community homes providing accommodation and care for people living with mental health challenges.
The funding forms part of a new agreement between the Ministry for Health, the National Mental Health Services and the Suret il-Bniedem Foundation, which operates Dar Imelda, Dar FranΔ‘isk and Dar Victoria.
Together, the three homes can support 32 residents, helping people continue living within the community while receiving long-term care in a more independent and dignified environment.
Health Minister Ian Borg said the agreement reflects the importance of collaboration between the government, NGOs and local communities to strengthen mental health services across Malta and Gozo.
He said the investment will help ensure mental health care continues to evolve while promoting greater social inclusion for people receiving support.
The agreement is also the first Public Social Partnership of its kind to formally regulate the government’s collaboration with the Suret il-Bniedem Foundation for the operation of the three homes.
Meanwhile, Foundation Chairperson Marique Sciberras welcomed the agreement, saying it provides long-term certainty for the services while allowing the organisation to continue improving community-based care.
Under the new framework, the government will not only provide financial support but also introduce clearer governance and funding arrangements aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability and the quality of long-term residential mental health care.
