The Nationalist Party has tabled a motion of censure and no confidence in Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, arguing that she should be held politically responsible for the recent wave of nationwide power cuts.

Opposition Leader Alex Borg and Shadow Minister for Energy Mark Anthony Sammut presented the motion in parliament, while calling on Prime Minister Robert Abela to either request Dalli’s resignation or dismiss her from Cabinet.

The motion follows days of electricity outages that left thousands of households and businesses without power during the peak of summer.

The PN argued that the crisis mirrors the widespread blackouts experienced in the summer of 2023, noting that it had tabled a similar motion at the time. It said that despite government promises and announced investment to strengthen the electricity distribution network, the outages have continued.

The Opposition also cited the National Audit Office’s recent report into Enemalta’s electricity distribution network, saying it found significant shortcomings in planning and concluded that underinvestment in the distribution system was the main cause of the power cuts.

According to the PN, the government failed to adequately prepare the country’s electricity infrastructure despite years of population growth and rising electricity demand.

The party said it was unacceptable that Dalli had not accepted political responsibility for the failures, arguing that ministers should be accountable when shortcomings within their portfolio result in a national crisis affecting people’s daily lives.

The PN said Malta and Gozo deserve a reliable electricity network, modern infrastructure and political accountability from the government.
