A police sergeant was assaulted and had to be taken to hospital after he sustained head injuries in St Julian’s in the early hours of this morning.

The incident, which happened at around 4am in St George’s Road, was triggered by an argument involving four Maltese nationals, two men and two women. According to the police, one of the men was arrested when he failed to follow the police officer’s orders to calm down.

It was reportedly during his arrest that another man (who was not involved in the original argument but likely knows the arrested person) ran up to the sergeant and punched him in the head.

As officers attempted to stop the assault and the sergeant defended himself, the second man sustained some injuries which required him to receive medical treatment. The sergeant was also taken to hospital for treatment.

Police investigations into this incident are still ongoing.
