Renowned Maltese actress and director Marylu Coppini, widely regarded as one of the country’s most versatile stage performers, has died at the age of 76. She passed away on Christmas Eve at Mater Dei Hospital after a short illness.
Coppini’s career in the performing arts spanned more than six decades, during which she worked extensively on both stage and screen before turning to directing in the late 1980s. She also served for several years as the artistic director of the Malta Amateur Dramatic Club (MADC).
On stage, she took lead roles in productions of Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde, as well as in plays such as Glorious and Tartuffe. Her final theatre appearance was as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest in 2020.
Coppini began her acting journey in 1962 with the children’s film Treasure in Malta, released the following year. Earlier this year, she appeared in the film Żafżifa. She was also a familiar face on Maltese television, regularly featuring in programmes including Santa Monica, Villa Sunset and L-Erba L’Huma, winning a Malta Television Award for the latter in 2006.
In addition to acting, she received the MADC Best Actress award twice and directed numerous productions such as Adult Entertainment, South Pacific, A Chorus of Disapproval, Private Lives, The Comedy of Errors, Charlie’s Aunt, The Merchant of Venice, and pantomimes including Rapunzel and Beauty and the Beast.Coppini is survived by her husband and two daughters, who have both participated in various MADC productions.
Longtime collaborator Edward Mercieca described her as a “legend of Maltese theatre,” and writer-performer Alan Montanaro called her a “true stalwart of the Maltese theatre scene and a pillar of MADC.”
PN deputy leader Alex Perici Calascione highlighted her “commanding presence on stage and on camera” and called her one of the most influential figures in Malta’s performing arts.
