The Armed Forces of Malta carried out an emergency medical evacuation yesterday after a crew member aboard a fishing vessel reportedly suffered from decompression sickness at sea.

According to an official statement issued by the AFM, the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC Malta) received an urgent request for assistance yesterday afternoon.

An AFM rescue vessel was immediately dispatched to evacuate the fisherman and transport him safely back to shore for medical treatment.

Once ashore, the patient was handed over to medical personnel from Mater Dei Hospital for further urgent care.

Decompression sickness, commonly associated with diving-related pressure changes, can become life-threatening if not treated quickly.

The AFM has not released further details on the individual’s condition or the location of the fishing vessel at the time of the rescue.
