The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has issued an official statement in response to an article published by Times of Malta concerning alleged match-fixing during the European Championships.

In its statement, the ASA categorically said that no official report, complaint, or formal notification relating to the alleged incidents has been filed with or received by the association to date.

β€œThe ASA firmly upholds the principles of integrity, transparency, and fair play, which are fundamental to sport at all levels. While we take any allegation of this nature seriously, it is imperative to emphasise that allegations remain allegations unless and until established though due process by the competent authorities.

We sincerely hope that these claims are unfounded. Any confirmation of such wrongdoing would not only be deeply disappointing but would also unjustly tarnish the significant efforts, progress, and investment made over recent years by the ASA, its officials, athletes, coaches and volunteers in advancing aquatic sports locally and internationally.

The ASA reiterates its full commitment to cooperate openly and fully with the relevant national and international authorities, should any investigation be formally initiated or any request for assistance be made. The Association will take all necessary measures with its remit to safeguard the integrity of the sport and to ensure the accountability, should this be required.

Until such time, the ASA urges restraint, responsibility and respect for the due process, both in public discourse and reporting.”

Speaking to Lovin Malta, ASA President Karl Izzo reiterated the association’s position, confirming: β€œWe received no official reports.”

The statement comes in response to a Times of Malta report alleging that several Malta national waterpolo players are under investigation over suspected match-fixing at the European Championships.
