A popular swimming spot in Ta’ Xbiex was briefly closed to bathers on Thursday before reopening just hours later, with authorities offering little explanation for either decision.

According to MaltaToday, a large notice appeared on the rocks beneath ix-Xatt ta’ Xbiex, facing Valletta, warning people against swimming due to what the Environmental Health Directorate described as “extraordinary circumstances”.

However, by mid-afternoon, the sign had been removed and swimmers were back in the water.

According to bathers, officials removed the notice and informed people that it was once again safe to swim.

The situation has raised questions after an Environmental Health Directorate spokesperson was unable to provide a clear explanation for the initial warning.

No official statement was issued regarding either the closure or the subsequent reopening of the bathing area.

The unusual incident comes just days after authorities warned against swimming in part of Birżebbuġa due to sewage contamination.
