During 2025, the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools (FTS) carried out a series of projects to enhance recreational spaces across several schools. These improvements included environmental maintenance as well as the installation of new artificial turf.
The total investment in these projects amounted to approximately €1,341,535. The two largest undertakings were at the Gozo College, covering seven grounds across both primary and middle schools, with a combined value of nearly €800,000, and at St George Preca College, Ħamrun Secondary School (Liceo), valued at over €200,000. In these schools, existing grounds were upgraded with artificial turf.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Ħamrun Liceo ground, Education and Sport Minister Clifton Grima highlighted the importance of investing in schools across Malta, not only through infrastructural improvements but also by enhancing sporting and recreational spaces.
“We are prioritising the wellbeing of our students, as outlined in the National Education Strategy 2024–2030. Beyond national-level work in the sports sector, we are ensuring that schools and educational institutions provide appropriate environments for sports and recreational activities,” Grima said. “We continue to develop programs and initiatives that place greater emphasis on sport and physical activity, while these projects ensure students have improved spaces for recreation and exercise.”
In addition to the major projects at the Gozo College and St George Preca College, investments were also made in recreational and physical activity spaces at several other schools, including: St George Preca Primary School, Ħamrun; St George Preca Primary School, Valletta; Santa Clara Primary School, Pembroke; Santa Clara Primary School, St Julian’s; St Ignatius Primary School, Żebbuġ; and St Thomas More Primary School in Żejtun.
“These upgrades ensure that open spaces are suitable for students to practice sports and engage in physical exercise. Through this investment, we are not only improving environments for recreation and physical activity, but we are also supporting the mental and social wellbeing of our students,” Grima concluded.
