Police searching Yorgen Fenech’s home and office seized a series of documents and items linked to major chapters of the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder case, including flip charts appearing to reference the Electrogas project, the infamous selfie of Melvin Theuma and Keith Schembri, and the contract for Theuma’s alleged phantom government job.

Former police inspector Keith Vella is currently testifying before a jury in day 27 in the trial against Yorgen Fenech over the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Vella served in the Police Corps between 2010 and 2021, before spending the final four years of his service with the Money Laundering Squad.

He testified that officers from the Major Crimes Unit searched Fenech’s home and office, where they seized several flip charts from the Tumas Group boardroom at Portomaso’s Level 21.

One flip chart contained the words “Siemens”, “Socar” and “M Turab” – all of which had previously featured in media reports linked to 17 Black, Fenech’s offshore company.

Another included the acronyms “EGM” and “LNG”, alongside a figure of €3 million.

Vella told the court that he believed “EGM” could refer to Electrogas Malta, the consortium behind the Delimara LNG power station, whose shareholders include Fenech, Siemens, Socar and other partners.

A few months before her assassination in October 2017, journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia had obtained a major leak containing more than 200,000 Electrogas Malta documents.

More charts and documents were seized during those searches, with some referencing “LNG” and “FSU” and others citing “Enemalta”. One found inside a cabinet mentions “New Energy Supply Limited” which was the company through which Fenech held his shareholding

In another cabinet, Vella said police found several documents linked to murder middleman Melvin Theuma. Among them was the handwritten note in which Theuma admitted his role in Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder and alleged that Keith Schembri and Yorgen Fenech were the masterminds behind the assassination.

Officers also recovered the now-infamous photograph of Theuma with Schembri at Castille, along with a copy of the contract for Theuma’s alleged phantom government job and five of his payslips.

When facing cross examination from the defence, Vella confirmed that he did not know who authored the documents seized from the Portomaso boardroom.
