The government’s first Cabinet decision of the new legislature will be to begin the process of removing farmland at Wied Iż-Żrinġ, on the edge of the Bulebel industrial area, from Malta’s development zone.
Prime Minister Robert Abela announced the move, saying it will provide environmental protection to a substantial stretch of agricultural land spanning almost 96,000 square metres that has long been the focus of campaigns by farmers, residents and environmental groups.
The decision follows years of calls to protect the Żejtun site from potential development and preserve its agricultural character.
Abela thanked the farmers who work the land, heritage NGO Wirt iż-Żejtun and the Żejtun Local Council for their efforts in pushing for the change.
Once the process is completed, the land will be removed from the development zone, significantly reducing the possibility of future construction on the site.
The announcement marks one of the first major environmental commitments of the new legislature and comes as debate over land use and development continues across Malta.
