On World Autism Awareness Day, Greens Supermarket announced a new initiative aimed at making shopping easier and more comfortable for people who feel overwhelmed in busy retail environments.
In collaboration with The Marigold Foundation, Malta, the supermarket is introducing “Greens Calm Hours,” dedicated quieter shopping periods designed to reduce sensory overstimulation.
The initiative recognises that for some people, a simple trip to the supermarket can be anything but simple, with bright lights, background music, screens and constant movement all contributing to an overwhelming experience.
During Calm Hours, music will be switched off, screens will remain off, and stores will adopt a more peaceful atmosphere to help create a gentler shopping environment.
The quieter shopping hours will be held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3pm to 5pm in Greens Supermarkets across Malta and Gozo.
The announcement was made to mark World Autism Awareness Day, with the initiative aiming to support not only autistic individuals, but also others who may experience sensory sensitivities, anxiety or discomfort in crowded and noisy spaces.
By introducing these quieter hours, Greens is helping take an important step toward making everyday spaces more inclusive, accessible and understanding.
The supermarket said the goal is simple: to create a space where more people can feel comfortable just being there.
It’s a small change that could make a very big difference for many families and individuals across the islands.
Will you be making use of these Calm Hours?
