Lee Bugeja Bartolo has said that the devastation caused by Storm Harry at Għar Lapsi, while severe, presents an opportunity to rethink the future of the area.

In a post on Facebook, Bartolo acknowledged the extent of the damage, noting that the storm altered parts of the landscape and left visible destruction, with assessments still ongoing. However, he argued that the aftermath could serve as a turning point if approached with vision and care.

Bartolo proposed reimagining Għar Lapsi as a more visually appealing and environmentally respectful space, suggesting architecture that blends harmoniously with its surroundings. He highlighted the potential for designs inspired by Mediterranean coastal aesthetics, with white facades reflecting traditional Maltese stone and touches of blue echoing the surrounding sea.

Describing the idea as a “mini Santorini,” Bartolo said such an approach could mark the beginning of a long-overdue vision for Malta, one that balances development with environmental preservation and restores neglected areas with sensitivity and purpose.

He added that the goal should be to better integrate the built environment with the natural landscape, creating spaces that respect Malta’s character while enhancing its coastal heritage.
