As a Maltese court heard allegations that around 200 people were defrauded out of roughly €1 million by someone posing as a bank, another side of the story has been playing out online.
Tammy Caruana, a 25-year-old from St Paul’s Bay, was charged last week with defrauding hundreds of victims by allegedly impersonating a bank as part of an international online fraud scheme. Caruana pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded in custody after the court denied her request for bail.
Police told the court that investigations, carried out by the Financial Crimes Investigations Department in coordination with Europol and authorities in Ireland and the UK, have so far identified around 200 victims who collectively suffered losses amounting to €1 million. Prosecutors argued that granting bail at this stage could risk interference with ongoing investigations, including the possible deletion of online data.
During searches linked to the case, police seized cash, mobile phones and electronic devices, while the court also ordered the freezing of Caruana’s assets.
Alongside the court proceedings, Caruana maintained an active TikTok presence, posting videos that showcased a carefully curated online persona — featuring heavy filters, cosmetic procedures and luxury-style aesthetics that are common across influencer culture.
While the TikTok content is not evidence of wrongdoing in itself, it offers a glimpse into the online life that existed during the period in which the alleged fraud is said to have taken place — a stark contrast to the accusations now being examined in court.
The case remains ongoing.
