The animated series “Karamellu tar-Raħal t’Isfel” has been named the winner of the Intellectual Property for Creative Initiative Award at the Malta Intellectual Property Awards 2025, organised by the Commerce Department, part of the Ministry for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects.

Karamellu is a boy born decades ago and raised in a traditional Maltese village, at a time when daily life and customs were very different from today. Children freely played in the streets, and neighbours knew each other well, creating a close-knit community.

The award was presented to Mr. Neil Zammit, CEO and Chief Animation Director of Toontuloon Animated Studio, which produced the series, and to Mr. Charles Buttigieg, the series’ author.

The Malta Intellectual Property Awards aim to promote the creation of intellectual property in Malta and recognise both innovative projects by newcomers and works from experienced creators in the creative, scientific, and technological sectors. The Creative Initiative Award specifically celebrates contributions from individuals or enterprises operating within the cultural and creative sphere.

This year’s awards ceremony was hosted by Economy Minister Silvio Schembri. Nearly €50,000 in prizes were distributed among winners and runners-up across the four award categories: Creative Initiative, Scientific Initiative, Technological Initiative, and Emerging Innovation Initiative.

Commenting on this year’s edition, the organisers said: “It is gratifying that for this edition we had a high level of projects.”

Congratulations to the team!
