Malta just pulled off one of the biggest moments in local rugby history.

The national team absolutely steamrolled Austria 39-13 at the Taโ€™ Qali national stadium, officially securing promotion to the Rugby Europe Trophy, the second tier of European rugby.

And they didnโ€™t just win. They dominated.

Playing in front of thousands of roaring fans in what was the first-ever rugby international hosted at Taโ€™ Qali, Malta delivered a statement performance from start to finish, brushing aside an Austrian side that had also arrived unbeaten.

The clash had been billed as the biggest match in Maltese rugby history, a one-game playoff with promotion on the line, and Malta turned it into a party.

The victory now sees Malta move up into the Rugby Europe Trophy, putting the island one step closer to competing regularly against some of the continentโ€™s stronger rugby nations.

From a sport that often flies under the radar locally, this felt like a watershed moment.

Taโ€™ Qali was loud. The tackles were brutal. The result was historic.

And Maltese rugby has officially levelled up
