A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering a 23-year-old man by stabbing him 18 times back in 2021 following an argument over a bottle of whiskey in Marsa.

According to Times of Malta, a jury found Amo Frank Kwaku guilty of the 2021 murder of fellow Ghanaian national Isaac Kwabena Kyere, with Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera handing down the life sentence on Monday. He was also ordered to pay €19,000 in court expenses.

Jurors found Kwaku guilty of wilful homicide by an 8-1 vote. He was also convicted of illegally detaining Kyere and illegally carrying a weapon, but was unanimously cleared of disobeying police orders.

Prosecutors said the two men had been visiting a friend’s home when an argument erupted over a bottle of whiskey. Kwaku left, followed shortly afterwards by Kyere, and the pair encountered each other again near the pedestrian bridge by Gerrejja Street.

Kwaku then stabbed Kyere 18 times, with several of the wounds proving fatal. Doctors who testified during the trial described finding the victim covered in blood with his heart stopped, while also noting cuts to his hands which may have been sustained as he tried to defend himself.

Emergency doctors attempted to revive Kyere at the scene and continued treating him while he was transported to Mater Dei Hospital, but he was eventually pronounced dead.

While awaiting the murder trial, Kwaku had initially been granted bail but was later re-arrested following an armed robbery at a Santa Venera convenience store in December 2025. He subsequently admitted to that robbery and received a four-year prison sentence.

The prosecution was led by the Attorney General lawyers Kaylie Bonett and Michael Muscat, while lawyer Josette Sultana appeared for Kwaku.
