Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is about stepping in early when someone is struggling with their mental health – whether they’re developing a condition, experiencing a worsening situation or facing a mental health crisis – until professional help is available.

Through internationally recognised, evidence-based training, MHFA equips people with the skills, confidence and knowledge to support friends, family members or colleagues dealing with challenges such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance use issues or crises including suicidal thoughts.

So far, 31 MHFA courses have been organised, with 745 people attending, helping to strengthen mental health awareness and support across Malta. The course is free and subsidised by the government, making it accessible to everyone who wants to learn these essential skills.

The MHFA course is delivered over 12 hours across four sessions, covering:

  • How to recognise signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions

  • Using the MHFA action plan (ALGEE) to respond safely and effectively

  • Supporting people experiencing depression, anxiety, panic attacks, trauma and psychosis

  • Responding to substance use problems and severe mental health crises

  • Knowing when and how to involve professional or emergency support

Participants also learn how to look after their own wellbeing while supporting others.

Mental Health First Aid is a practical, life-changing skill that helps reduce stigma, build empathy and create safer, more supportive communities β€” whether at work, at school or at home.
