The gale-force winds currently affecting the Maltese Islands are expected to ease later this afternoon.

From around 6pm, wind speeds are forecast to drop rapidly, becoming moderate by approximately 9pm. Winds will continue veering to the west-southwest, remaining moderate to rather strong.

Currently, Depression Harry is positioned over the Gulf of Gabes and is expected to track northwards throughout the day, passing over northern Tunisia. This movement will contribute to a further reduction in wind strength, particularly overnight.

The red weather warning, the highest level issued by the Meteorological Office, has been downgraded to an orange warning. The public is still strongly advised to avoid coastal areas and other locations exposed to strong winds. The warning remains in effect until 8pm this evening and may be renewed if conditions require.

In addition to strong winds, the day is expected to remain predominantly cloudy, with periods of rain and suspended dust in the air.

The strongest wind gust recorded in recent hours was measured shortly after 7am, reaching a peak of 50 knots, according to the Meteorological Office.

Cloudy conditions are forecast to persist over the coming days, with the possibility of isolated showers. Winds may briefly strengthen to rather strong or strong for short periods on Thursday.

Suspended dust is expected to decrease during Wednesday, with air quality improving fully by Friday.

The public is encouraged to continue following issued weather warnings and to stay updated through official reports from the Malta Meteorological Office.
