Public Broadcasting Services has issued a statement following a concern raised by Rhiannon Micallef after her performance during the Malta Eurovision Song Contest semi-final.
According to PBS, the issue was addressed promptly, with the broadcaster meeting Micallef and members of her artistic team to listen to the concerns raised and to review the performance in detail.
Following what PBS described as “comprehensive technical checks and assessments”, the broadcaster said no production-side technical fault or audio malfunction was identified or substantiated.
PBS explained that the situation was assessed in line with established procedures and the contest’s rules, adding that on this basis there was no justification to authorise a repeat performance.
“As a general principle, a repeat performance may only be considered in exceptional circumstances where a verified technical failure has occurred and has materially affected the performance,” PBS said, noting that any such decision is taken on a case-by-case basis following confirmation by the relevant technical and production teams.
In its statement, PBS also reiterated its commitment to treating all performers with respect and to ensuring fairness, transparency and consistency in how contest rules are applied.
The statement follows comments made by Micallef after the semi-final, in which she said she believed a technical issue had affected her performance. While PBS said its checks did not confirm a malfunction, the broadcaster confirmed it took the concerns seriously and engaged directly with the artist and her team before reaching a decision.
The matter has since sparked discussion among Eurovision fans, with PBS maintaining that its ruling was made strictly in line with the contest’s established rules.
What do you think? Should she be given a second chance?
