Maltese presenter and media personality Peppi Azzopardi has suggested changing parts of the lyrics of Bella, originally performed by Aidan, amid ongoing discussions around the Eurovision Song Contest and calls for a boycott linked to the Israel–Palestine conflict.
In a social media post, Azzopardi said he does not agree with boycotting Eurovision, arguing that countries should participate in international competitions whenever given the opportunity. However, he proposed that Malta could use its participation as a platform to convey a humanitarian message.
Describing Bella as “one of the most beautiful international songs ever associated with Eurovision,” Peppi suggested modifying part of the lyrics to dedicate the opening section to Palestinian children who have died during the conflict.
He said he aimed to keep as much of the original song as possible while adding references to the scale of child casualties and a message calling for justice.
The proposed version includes lines questioning why “20,000 children had to die” and centres on themes of loss, empathy, justice and hope for peace. According to Azzopardi, the wording was deliberately kept non-political to avoid potential objections from the European Broadcasting Union.
Azzopardi also confirmed that he sent the proposal to Public Broadcasting Services chairperson Anna Bonnet for consideration.
