The Nationalist Party has renewed calls for Energy Minister Miriam Dalli to shoulder political responsibility for Malta’s ongoing power cut crisis, insisting that Parliament should debate its motion of no confidence before the summer recess.

During a press conference outside the Ministry for Energy, the Environment and Grand Harbour Regeneration in Valletta, Shadow Ministers Mark Anthony Sammut and Darren Carabott said the government was continuing to ignore the impact prolonged power cuts are having on families and businesses across Malta.

The PN argued that some localities have endured days, and in some cases more than a week, without a stable electricity supply, saying the disruptions are affecting vulnerable people, workers, businesses and the country’s overall productivity.

The Opposition also criticised Prime Minister Robert Abela, accusing his government of failing to invest adequately in the electricity network despite years in office.

Referring to a National Audit Office report, the PN claimed there had been insufficient investment in Malta’s high-voltage network between 2014 and 2023 and questioned how the €140 million earmarked for electricity infrastructure had been spent.

Among its proposals, the PN is calling for:

• Political responsibility to be carried by Energy Minister Miriam Dalli.
• Automatic compensation for households and businesses affected by power cuts.
• Compensation for Enemalta workers who have been working under pressure to restore electricity.
• A full account of recent faults and breakdowns across the electricity network.
• Greater transparency on Enemalta’s finances, infrastructure plans and spending.

The Opposition also urged Parliament to debate its motion of no confidence in Dalli before MPs break for the summer, arguing that the issue cannot be left unresolved while power cuts continue affecting thousands of residents.

The government has yet to respond to the PN’s latest statement.
