Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela announced that in the coming days, a public call will be issued for a drone service to establish the rapid transfer of pharmaceutical and biological material between Mater Dei Hospital and Gozo General Hospital.

Dr Abela explained that in recent months, the Office of the Chief Medical Officer together with Gozo General Hospital worked to structure this tender.

โ€œThe drone service is expected to treat dozens of Gozitan patients in Gozo itself and reduce unnecessary inconvenience for them and their families,โ€ Dr Abela said.

Through this innovative mode of transport, monoclonal antibody medicines are expected to be transferred regularly, safely and efficiently so that more patients can receive the treatment they need within an expanded Day Care Unit at Gozo General Hospital.

โ€œThis project is linked to an infrastructure extension that is currently being expanded to accommodate fifteen patients instead of six,โ€ Minister Abela added.

Dr Abela praised the efforts of the Pharmacy and Pathology Departments of both hospitals and expressed appreciation for expert advice from Transport Malta, the Civil Protection Department and officials from the United Kingdom.

This transport method will also allow blood samples, fluids and tissue samples to be delivered quickly, resulting in more robust diagnoses and improved levels of care.

The tender is therefore intended to connect all entities within the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing through the use of drones, including San Vinฤ‹enz de Paul and the ฤŠensu Moran Centre.

โ€œThis is a historic step for the healthcare of Gozitans in Gozo itself, where we will be investing over one million euro in the next two years to increase comfort and quality of care in Gozo,โ€ the Minister concluded.
