Chef Sean Gravina has raised concerns about whether Malta’s economic growth is translating into tangible benefits for residents, particularly when it comes to housing affordability.
In a social media post analysing the current situation, Gravina noted that Malta is often regarded as having one of the strongest economies in Europe, while acknowledging the challenge of maintaining stability in the present climate.
However, he questioned why many people still require assistance to purchase their first home.
“If we are in a position to help those who want to buy their first home, then yes, let’s help. This is something positive. But if our economy is so strong, why is there still a need for assistance for a person to afford a home?”
Gravina said that while support measures are important, the broader goal should be ensuring that economic success is felt more directly by families and individuals.
“Help is important and appreciated, but it now seems that the time has come for the economy itself to begin changing more into a real and direct benefit for Maltese families and individuals.”
He concluded by asking whether people genuinely feel able to keep up with the rising cost of living, purchase property or invest for the future.
His comments reflect an ongoing national discussion around living standards, wages and the long-term accessibility of home ownership in Malta.
