A structure was exposed at Għadira Bay following yesterday’s storm, which is believed to be linked to a former road alignment in the area.

Historical aerial photographs taken on 18th August 1957 by Fairey Air Surveys Ltd—widely referenced in technical and geomorphological studies comparing shoreline and road positions—suggest a strong likelihood that the feature corresponds to an older road alignment. This interpretation is further supported by research conducted by Prof. Kenneth Pye and by the Survey of Malta – L-Għadira, Mellieħa Bay Area (1899–1907), archived at the National Archives of Malta.

It is interesting how yesterday’s weather event has temporarily brought this hidden feature back into view after so many decades. It also provides a useful opportunity to better understand how the Għadira coastline and infrastructure have evolved over time,” Mellieħa mayor Gabriel Micallef told Lovin Malta.

Documentation from the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) notes that when the old Għadira road was realigned further inland during the 1980s, the distance between the road and the sea increased. This change made sections of the beach appear wider—not due to sand covering the old road, but because the road itself had shifted landwards.
