A 16-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after being rescued from the sea at Fajtata Bay in Marsascala earlier today.

As reported by Times of Malta, Red Cross lifeguards sprang into action after the teenager’s parents raised the alarm, with the boy being found face down in the water before he was pulled to safety.

The exact circumstances leading up to the incident remain unclear, and it is not yet known whether the teen fell into the sea or got into difficulty while swimming.

“The parents called out for help, and luckily the lifeguards were nearby,” sources told Times of Malta.

The boy was taken to hospital in an ambulance and was reported to be breathing and responsive.

Following the rescue, the Red Cross thanked members of the public for quickly alerting its lifeguards and reminded swimmers to choose beaches where lifeguards are on duty whenever possible.

The organisation currently provides lifeguard services at Għadira, Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa, Buġibba Perched Beach, Qawra Point, Fond Għadir, St George’s Bay in St Julian’s, Fajtata Bay and Pretty Bay.

Around 80 trained professionals, including lifeguards, emergency medical responders and specialist sea rescue operators, are deployed daily across these beaches between 9.30am and 6pm until the end of October.
