A 30‑year‑old Hungarian tourist was arrested after he was seen carving numbers into a stone at the ancient Ġgantija Temples on Gozo.

The Ġgantija Temples, dating from around 3600–3200 BC, are among the oldest freestanding structures in the world.

Other tourists that were visiting the temples noticed the man carving on to the megalithic stones using a rock. They reported the incident at around 11.30am and the police went on site immediately.

The damage was described by authorities as not extensive, and an investigation into the incident is continuing.

This is not the first such case at the temples. In 2023, an Italian student was fined €15,000 for damaging the Ġgantija Temples.

He pleaded guilty and was given a two‑year prison sentence, suspended for four years- the maximum permitted under Maltese law.
