Divers from Coast Is Clear made a potentially dangerous discovery while carrying out a ghost net clean-up off Ċirkewwa, coming across an unexploded World War II-era bomb beneath the Gozo ferry route.
The bomb was spotted tangled around an 80-metre-long ghost net around 200 metres off the coast and at a depth of approximately 37 metres.
Coast Is Clear founder Mark Galea Pace said the team had already been working on the net for around 10 minutes before noticing the bomb. “We were shocked to see it. You never know what could have set it off,” he said.
The divers immediately reported the discovery to the Armed Forces of Malta and are expected to coordinate with the army to pinpoint its exact location.
The bomb is estimated to be around 1.5 metres long, although its origin remains unclear. Its appearance is reportedly similar to both German and British aerial bombs used during World War II.
Galea Pace said he had previously discovered WWII-era fighter plane bullets while diving off Marsaxlokk, but this was the first bomb he had encountered.
The clean-up operation was being carried out by Coast Is Clear together with diver Raniero Borg, with Piero Di Pilato and Anna Degiorgio also taking part in the dive.
