With the World Cup kicking off today, football fever has reached the corridors of European politics.
Spanish MEP Adrián Vázquez Lázara joined the excitement by sharing his own political “Dream Team” on Instagram, selecting a lineup of European political figures as if he were managing a World Cup squad.
And guarding the goal? Malta’s own Roberta Metsola.
The President of the European Parliament was handed the Number 1 jersey and placed between the posts, a choice that appears to reflect her reputation as one of Brussels’ most recognisable and influential political figures.
Metsola featured alongside a host of political heavyweights, including former Spanish Prime Ministers José María Aznar and Felipe González, European Commission Executive Vice-President Stéphane Séjourné and veteran Belgian politician Guy Verhofstadt.
Sharing the video, Vázquez Lázara joked that every Spaniard has a national team manager inside them, before revealing what he considers to be his ideal political lineup.
While Malta has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup, Metsola continues to represent the country on some of Europe’s biggest stages.
And if this political fantasy football team is anything to go by, she’s apparently the safe pair of hands you’d want protecting your goal.
What do you make of Metsola’s position?
